The company partners with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), offering mentoring support for local high school teams participating in FIRST Robotics competitions that build STEM skills and encouraging innovation, self-confidence, and leadership. This year, GM’s own Milton Martinez was awarded FIRST Robotics “Mentor of the Year,” recognized for his dedication to his team - the only team from Detroit to make the World Championships. Martinez acts as a site lead for all the competitions teams that prepare at the Robotics Engineering Center of Detroit, located in southwest Detroit with teams comprised predominantly of Hispanics and African-Americans. An amazing role model and someone that looks like them, Martinez is the Chief of the Chief Engineers, a Mentor of Mentors, working after hours and on weekends to help kids find their path in engineering. GM would like to congratulate Martinez, all members of the GM team that volunteer their time to this outstanding cause, and the FIRST Robotics participants that work so diligently to bring their creations to life.
